What follows below is an experiment - the beginning of a somewhat epic poem. Whether I shall ever finish it is debatable. However, it is posted below for its first public airing. Feel free to comment ...
I
If we should walk and should you take my hand
As off we wandered in the morning mist
I'd challenge you to try and understand
The mystery of the world, each unseen twist
And convoluted turn. Could you resist
The chance to see the world through other eyes;
Avenging Angels make their fearsome list
And cast their lots for souls? No greater prize
Is sought in Hell, so watch wide eyed, and hold your cries.
II
For this will be your privilege, to see
The sight of Angels on the battle field
With Heaven as the battle ground. With me
To guide you all the woes will be revealed.
The fight is to the end, and none will yield
Till vict'ry is announced by Heav'n or Hell.
The wounds inflicted once are never healed
Though some may claim that once the Darkness fell
The story would be lost - there'd be no tale to tell.
III
This hist'ry starts before the dawn of Man
So long ago we cannot count in years.
There was no Earth and time so gently ran
Tomorrow never came - so hence no fears.
As sadness was not born there were no tears
Of sorrow or remorse. The universe,
With endless multitudes of drifting spheres
And planetoids and stars would but traverse
As if condemned eternally by some strange curse.
IV
A savage beauty shone with burning light
Across the heavens. Stars responded, fire
And ice illuminating day and night
With endless nothing robed in rich attire.
As worlds collapsed an awesome funeral pyre
Was spread across the panoply of space.
The death of stars served only to inspire
The birth of new arrivals in their place;
Disorder held by some invisible embrace.
V
Across this vast and beautiful array
A flawless Prince shone brighter than a star.
His crown of comets held the suns at bay,
His regent's robe lit planets from afar
And darkest night was lit like glorious day;
Prince Lucifer, Archangel of the sky,
The Bringer of the Light and, come what may,
All those who saw his splendour up on high
Could only gaze in wonder, stare above and sigh.
VI
Such was his high position that his throne
Was higher that the Heavens, higher still
Than any Angel's or Archangel's known.
And though comparisons may oft bode ill
The highest mountain was a meagre hill
Unmarked by any monument or stone.
The throne was there for destiny to fill
Without a palace or a mighty tower.
The Prince alone would bring the dawn, the morning hour.
VII
By far he was most trusted of the host
That dwelt on Heaven's peaceful, endless plain.
He did not have to plead his cause or boast
Of his accomplishments. Should some complain
He was the first to make the peace and gain
Respect and love from all concerned. But yet
Ambition held no place nor entered his domain.
To no-one else was Lucifer in debt;
His charity and kindness, they could not forget.
VIII
But great and peerless Angels do not reign
On high so Lucifer, though favoured, paid
His homage to the Lord of Hosts. No vain
Or hapless Angel ever had betrayed
Their king of kings and each one prayed
That mighty God would rule for ever more,
That heaven's pow'r and glory would not fade.
The honour of the Lord was at the fore
And all the hosts would happ'lly worship and adore.
IX
Millennia would pass so swift, so fast -
With nothing changed. There were no years, no days,
No concept of the future or the past
As time disintegrated in a haze.
But this was not inertia, no lost phase.
There was no cause to change, no need to shift
The course of epochs filled with constant praise.
Each passing age was looked on as a gift,
And criticism of the status quo was swift.
X
Eternal Lord of Hosts he was, the King,
Creator and the wisest of the wise.
Sweet, soft and gentle music oft took wing
As heav'nly harps played gentle lullabies.
Fair Cherubim's and Seraphim's soft cries
Of rapture tinged with everlasting peace
Would start as silent echoes, then would rise
In sweet harmonious hymns that would not cease;
Perpetual love expressed in musical release.
XI
Prince Lucifer was foremost in the ranks
Of Archangelic cohorts giving song
And offering their never ending thanks
To God their Lord. The vast Angelic throng
Saw pure perfection everywhere, no wrong
Was ever seen or done. And, so it seemed,
Eternity could pass with love so strong
And so complete that how could it be dreamed
Transgressions could exist or need to be redeemed.
XII
But all that vast existence lived in void
And in the void there was no form or shape.
So, God almighty looked and He employed
Omnipotent and unknown pow'r to drape
The dark in light; and nothing could escape
Its beauty as He rolled away this dearth
Revealing, far below, a new landscape.
And countless moons and stars gave silent birth
As mighty God created Heaven and the Earth.
